How to Improve Your Self Care

Updated: Aug 30, 2022

Self care is taking the time to take care of your own mental, physical and emotional health. Self care is a big part of mental wellness. The United States Government finds self care to be so important they posted several resources on their website. They found that self care can help you manage stress, lower your risk of illness, and increase your energy.

If you have ever flown on a plane, then you may remember the flight attendant telling you to put on your oxygen mask before you help others. I often think of this analogy when I think of self care. It helps me to avoid feeling guilty for needing time and space away from my obligations.

Here are some things I have learned about self care:

  • It looks different for everyone, especially at different life stages.

  • When I am feeling extra crabby, it is because I have not taken care of myself.

  • Just as I set aside special time with my loved ones each week, I can do the same for me.

  • Sometimes doing nothing is the most productive thing I can be doing (recharging).

  • My family and friends see my example and do the same for themselves.

  • It can look different depending on what area of self care has been neglected the most.

Here are my favorite ways to practice self care:

  • Taking a bath while watching a movie

  • Pedicure

  • Reading a book

  • Exercising

  • Spending time in nature

  • Doing nothing

  • Sleeping in

  • Taking a nap

  • Baking

  • Crafting

  • House project

  • Reconnecting with a friend

  • Meditation

Remember, we can't pour from our cup and into others if we don't have anything in our cup. This is why it is important for us to take the time regularly refill our cup.

What are your favorite ways to practice self care? Set aside some time this week to refill your cup and let me know how it went.
